“You shall dwell in booths seven days… so that your generations may know.”
Friends,
This week Israel moves outdoors. Sukkot begins, and for seven days this whole country eats and sings and sleeps in booths open to the sky, because the Book says: so that your generations may know. Knowing, in this land, has always been something you do with your body. You sit in the booth. You walk the ground.
Most of you cannot walk the ground this week. So I built something for you, and the truth is I built it over many months and never properly told you.
On the map of the holy places on our site there now live eight short films, each about one minute, each from one place, in my own voice. I call them One Thing, because each film gives you a single thing to carry: one thing about Capernaum. One thing about the Mount of Beatitudes. One thing about Cana, Bethsaida, Kursi, Nain, Shiloh, and the Jordan.
Eight places. Eight minutes. A pilgrimage the length of a coffee.
Here is my ask for the feast week. Take one film a day. Watch it, then pray for that place by name, that day. By the end of Sukkot you will have walked eight stations of this land in your own booth, wherever your booth is, and the land will have been prayed over from one more corner of the earth.
So that your generations may know. Knowing can start with one minute.
